Two students have been charged in connection with an attack on a transgender woman in Brighton.

The incident happened on King’s Road at around 2.05am on Sunday (November 18).

Police were called after a transgender woman and her friends were allegedly subjected to abuse from individuals on a balcony.

In a statement, Sussex Police said:

“William Emerson, 19, and Benjamin Weyman, 21, both students from Beaconsfield Road, Brighton have been charged with using threatening, abusive and insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress”.

They will appear at Brighton Magistrates Court on 6 December.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is being marked in Brighton this Sunday (25 November).

In 2009, Andrea Waddell, a transgender woman, was murdered in her home in Brighton.

She had been strangled and her bedroom set on fire.

Neil McMillan was found guilty of the murder in 2010.
