An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy from Brighton have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following an attack in the city’s LGBT district.

The incident happened during the early hours of Friday morning in Kemptown near St James’s Street.

Sussex Police say a 42-year-old man received serious head injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital for treatment.

The victim has since been transferred to Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre, where he remains in a critical condition with his family by his bedside.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick May from Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Branch Team said: “Officers have remained at the scene throughout the day, speaking to residents and local businesses.

“It is still unclear how the victim received his injuries. I would appeal to anyone who heard a disturbance or witnessed any suspicious activity between 11.30pm (25 October) and 12.30am (26 October) near the junction of St James’s Street and the New Steine, and has not yet spoken to officers, to please get touch as a matter of urgency”.

Detectives say the assault may be linked to an incident that occurred about 90 minutes later in Washington Street, near the Level, where two men aged 20 and 21 were assaulted and robbed by another two men.

The attack is not being treated as a hate crime.

Witnesses and anyone with information that could help police with their enquiries are asked to call 101 quoting Op Redshank or leave a message anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111
