An LGBT youth group in Montenegro has initiated a nocturnal campaign to put up pro-gay posters around the capital city of Podgorica.

Following the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the Montenegrin group Juventas printed pink posters with the slogan: “Every day is a day of fight against homophobia and transphobia. Live your life.”

Montenegro is establishing some legal protections for its gay citizens. As an official candidate for accession to the EU, it implemented anti-discrimination legislation in 2010 which specifically protected people on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Gay relationships have no legal protections under Montenegrin law.

Juventas, the group behind the nocturnal posters said their activity was not without disruption, as the video below shows. A young man followed the group, they said, swearing and tearing up the posters.

The posters are part of Juventas’s 2012 campaign, Live Your Life.

The group said: “From one point of view, it represents the aspiration to create conditions in which LGBT persons can fully enjoy respect and equality. From another, this is a message for all other citizens to reconsider their actions and become aware of how strong hatred can influence words and doings.

“The campaign says that we should live our lives free of prejudices, but also live our lives free of fear.”
