Lady Gaga has confirmed she will be appearing as herself in a new episode of the Simpsons.

The singer and gay rights campaigner will descend on Springfield after learning of the town’s low self-esteem, and will take precocious Lisa under her wing and tries to empower her through song.

Yeardley Smith, who voices Lisa on the show, told US theatre magazine Broadway.com: “This is extraordinary! I’m stunned that she has time in her schedule that she’s coming to our studio to record.

“She’s playing herself, and [The Simpsons writers] describe her as the happiest, most optimistic person in the world. She comes to Springfield to try to cheer up Lisa, but she can’t.”

Matt Groening told Entertainment Weekly: “Since the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to have on the most iconic personalities of our time, and she’s it.”

Executive producer Al Jean hailed her appearance as a first, saying: “For the first time in the history of The Simpsons, we are honored to have on a show business legend who is younger than our show.”

Lady Gaga added: The 25-year-old told Entertainment Weekly: “I make music, but I don’t do voice-overs every day of the week and their characters are so awesomely convincing and sincere and wild and funny, I had to remind myself constantly of the sincerity of the humour.

“That’s what I was trying to focus on, not putting on a character too much and really being as sincere as I could with the lines.”

Lady Gaga revealed that her character ends up kissing Marge.

She joked: “The apple doesn’t fall far from my artistic tree”.
