Jane Lynch says she knew she was a lesbian at age 12

Jessica Geen July 20, 2011

Glee star Jane Lynch says that although she was 21 when she came out, she knew she was gay from a much earlier age.

Speaking to Vogue, the actress said she knew by the age of 12.

She said she had never “felt quite right” but realised she was gay when she saw two boys holding hands while on holiday in Florida.

She said: “[I thought], ‘That’s what I have… I am the girl version of that’.”

Lynch added: “When I grew up… I didn’t want to be too tall. I didn’t want to be too loud. I didn’t want to be gay.”

The actress, who married her wife Lara Embry last year, is now well-known for speaking out on LGBT issues.
