Two men deny inciting anti-gay hatred
Two Derby men have denied inciting hatred by distributing leaflets which allegedly called for gays to be killed.
Razwan Javed, 30, and Kabir Ahmed, 27, appeared at Southern Derbyshire magistrates’ court yesterday to plead not guilty to the charge.
They are the first to be charged under new laws against stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.
The men were accused of handing out leaflets called ‘The Death Penalty?’ outside a Derby mosque.
The material reportedly said that gay people should be executed and the men are also accused of pushing it through letterboxes.
Another three men have also been charged over the leaflets but did not enter a plea yesterday, the Derby Telegraph reports.
Ihjaz Ali was charged with four counts of distributing threatening written material intending to stir up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation.
Umer Javed and Mehboob Hussain were each charged with two counts of delivering the leaflets.
All five will appear at Derby crown court on March 24th.
