Coronation Street actress Brooke Vincent has said her character will remain a lesbian, rather than it being a “phase”.

She plays teenager Sophie Webster in the show, who has begun a relationship with her best friend Sian Powers, played by Sacha Parkinson.

The lesbian romance, a first for the long-running soap, will shortly be discovered by Ryan Connor (Ben Thompson).

Speaking on This Morning, Vincent was questioned whether her character’s sexuality was just “a phase she’s going through”.

She replied: “No. In the story conference, they wanted to point out that it wasn’t a phase because it’s not a phase to most people.

“We wanted to play it really real and just normal. You have a stereotype of what a lesbian is and it’s not always like that.”

She added: “You’re just going to see the ups and downs of it all. Just stay tuned.”

Coronation Street did not have any gay activity until 2003, despite its massive gay fanbase.
