Mexico City offers free honeymoon to first gay couple to wed in Argentina

PinkNews Staff Writer July 16, 2010

The first gay couple to take advantage of same-sex marriage in Argentina have been offered a free honeymoon by Mexico City.

Argentina will be the first Latin American country to allow gay couples to wed when the law comes into effect while Mexico City made the legislative change last December.

The city’s tourism secretary, Alejandro Rojas, said the lucky couple would enjoy an all expenses-paid holiday in the capital and in the beach resort of Cancun.

Mr Rojas said the offer was “a recognition of tolerance, but first and foremost a way to promote gay tourism in Mexico”.

He added that gay tourists were more discerning and respectful, while spending almost 50 per cent more than straight tourists.

Argentina’s Senate backed a bill to remove gender from marriage laws yesterday, despite some opposition from Catholic leaders.

Both Argentina and Mexico City’s give gay couples full marriage equality, including the right to adopt.

Previously, only a few areas in Argentina recognised civil unions between same-sex couples: Buenos Aires itself, the province of Río Negro in Patagonia, and the city of Villa Carlos Paz in Córdoba province.
