Police name San Francisco Pride murder suspect
The man suspected of killing one person and injuring two others at San Francisco Pride has been named by police.
Ed Perkins, 20, is accused of shooting dead 19-year-old Stephen Powell and injuring two other people, a 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman who expected to make a full recovery.
They were both shot in the leg.
The incident is reportedly not being treated as a hate crime, and it is believed Mr Perkins and Mr Powell are associated with different gangs.
The shooting took place at around 11.30pm in the Castro district, a neighbourhood which has been heavily populated with gay men and lesbians since the 1960s. The streets were thronging with partygoers celebrating ‘Pink Saturday’ when an unidentified man pulled out a gun and began firing.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos, in which police officers rushed into the crowd, who in response to the sound of gunfire, began to throw bottles and other objects.
Mr Perkins has been charged with murder, carrying a concealed weapon and gang charges.
In a separate incident, two people were shot yesterday during a vigil for Mr Powell in the city’s Castro District.
According to Associated Press, a 21-year-old man was shot through the cheek and a 19-year-old was shot in the leg.
Neither of the men’s injuries are said to be life-threatening.
