Lady Gaga was given the award for Outstanding Music Artist at Saturday’s GLAAD awards in San Francisco.

The yearly awards celebrate equality campaigning for LGBT rights and are hosted by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Gaga, who is bisexual and an LGBT rights campaigner, won the gong for her latest album The Fame Monster, beating her gay friend Adam Lambert.

The Davidson/Valentini Award was won by Lee Daniels, the gay director of the film Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.

He said: “I come from a world where I was beaten daily by my dad because of my gayness.

“I had bullies and I wanted to kill myself.”

Cybill Shepherd won the Golden Gate Award for her portrayal of lesbian Phyllis Kroll in The L Word and was given the gong by her two daughters.

She said: “We stand on the shoulders of our elders and I want to thank everyone who’s worked so hard to make this possible.

“I’m very humbled and I don’t know that I could be more dedicated to this cause, but I could never thank you enough, GLAAD, for your education of me.”

Country singer Chely Wright, who recently came out, and Australian dance singer Sam Sparro also joined the ceremony, which was the last of three for this year’s GLAAD awards.

Golden Gate Award – Cybill Shepherd
Davidson/Valentini Award – Lee Daniels
