The inquest opened into the death of Alexander McQueen heard today that the fashion designer had hanged himself.

McQueen, 40, was found hanging in a wardrobe by his cleaner at his Mayfair home on Thursday February 11th, ten days after his mother died.

An inquest opened today at Westminster Coroner’s Court heard that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and that a post mortem examination showed he had died from asphyxiation and hanging.

The inquest also heard he had left a suicide note.

Reporters in court were passed a note asking them to respect the fact that the McQueen family had suffered two tragedies in a matter of weeks.

McQueen killed himself the day before his mother Joyce’s funeral. His family reportedly anguished all night over whether to bury the pair together, but eventually decided the planned funeral should go ahead.

He announced his mother’s death on Twitter just after she died and later updated it with: “Been a f***ing awful week but my friends have been great but now I have to some how pull myself together and finish with the HELLS ANGLES & PROLIFIC DEAMONS!!!!.”

Friends were said to be concerned about his erratic behaviour following her death.
The inquest was adjourned until April 28th.
