University to launch research network for LGBT History Month
The University of Salford is to create an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) research network
The research network was launched at an LGBT History Month event at the university last night. This was the first regional event for the month, which has been running for several years.
Steve Pugh, co-ordinator for the network, said: “The idea is for the network to run across the region. This means that, as well as encouraging Salford colleagues to join up, we would like to hear from colleagues if they have contacts based elsewhere in the region who might wish to join too. We also welcome suggestions of any pre-existing networks we could link in with.”
Organisers say the network would not just be for academic purposes and would also be a forum where LGBT researchers can work with each other as well as a range of user and community groups.
Pugh added: “We want to hold meetings at various points in the year to bring academics, users and practitioners together to share ideas and develop projects.”
LGBT History Month was inspired by its US equivalent, which has been celebrated since 1994. This year, the UK event was granted its first reception at 10 Downing Street.
Along with the Salford launch, an event was held at the British Museum in London last month, where schoolchildren were invited to take part in special LGBT-themed tours.
