A transgender politician in the United States has said she is going to sue social networking site Twitter over a fake account.

Melissa Sue Robinson, 58, is running for Mayor of Nampa, the second-largest city in the state of Idaho, population 51,867.

A Twitter account was created in her name under the title the title “woman with a penis” and used to send lewd messages to other users.

“I e-mailed Twitter and called them and did the same thing with Google and asked them to remove it and that was month ago and they haven’t removed it,” Ms Robinson told Idaho TV station Fox12.

She also said she was going to take legal action against the person, as yet unidentified, who created the Twitter account.

Earlier this year many of the traditional media in the UK were fooled by a fake Twitter feed purporting to be Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Several newspapers printed a comment from the feed commenting on the death of singer Michael Jackson.

The Foreign Office then intervened and pointed out Mr Miliband does not have a Twitter account.

On her website, Ms Robinson sets out why she should be elected Mayor in November’s election.

“I am running because I’m progressive and feel that Nampa’s a city that needs progressive people in city government,” she wrote.

“With many years of political and business experience, my desire is to give back to society by bringing that experience to your city government.”
