Trevor Phillips has been reappointed for a second three-year term as the chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

His appointment was revealed by equality minister Harriet Harman yesterday.

Baroness Prosser is also to serve a second term as deputy chair.

Harman said: “I am delighted to be reappointing Trevor Phillips and Margaret Prosser as Chair and Deputy Chair of the EHRC. Their experience at the helm will be critical in helping us to put the flesh on the bones of the new Equality Bill.

“The commission will continue to push forward its important work on entrenched problems like the gender pay gap, which is particularly high in the financial services sector, and the subject of an ongoing inquiry.

“It will also be focusing on its role as equality enforcer making sure public authorities comply with their duties to tackle discrimination and promote fair opportunities for all.

Citing “tough economic times”, Harman added that the board of commissioners is to be reduced.

Current commissioners include Stonewall chief executive Ben Summerskill and Reverend Joel Edwards, a former Evangelical leader and gay rights critic.

Phillips recently apologised for the “intense hurt” Edwards’ appointment had caused.

The application process for new commissioners will open later this month.

The EHRC is to publish its strategic plan for the next three years later today. It will include supporting implementation of the new Equality Bill and preparing public authorities for the new Equality Duty.

The commission is also expected to publish its annual reports shortly.
