The Business Secretary has hinted he would consider taking part in BBC television show Strictly Come Dancing.

Lord Mandelson, who returned to frontline UK politics last month as a surprise appointment to the Cabinet, told BBC Breakfast that he had been watching the show.

The peer, who was an EU Commissioner before his appointment by Gordon Brown, said he was supporting political journalist John Sergeant in the current contest.

“I was cheering for John Sergeant on Saturday with, I have to say, a degree of envy,” he said.

When asked if he would like to appear on the show, Lord Mandelson said:

“It would be nice to be asked.”

In an interview later today he declined to show off his dancing skills but said:

“Another day invite me back and I will show you what I can do.”

Mr Sergeant has been ridiculed by judges on the reality show, where celebrities and a professional dance partner compete for the votes of the judges and the public, showcasing range of dancing styles.

The public vote has saved the political journalist, a well-known face on British television.

Lord Mandelson’s revelation that he is light on his feet could mean that he, and not Lib Dem deputy leader Vince Cable, could become the first politician to take part in Strictly.

Mr Cable is well-known for his love of ballroom dancing.

Lord Mandelson, who took a seat in the Upper House in order to return to the government, is the first gay man to serve in the Cabinet since 2001.
