Conference blog: Wheeling around Bournemouth with Lembit

Celebrity MP and asteroid enthusiast Lembit Opik was showing off his skill on two wheels this morning.

He has become enamoured of an American device called a Segway and was quietly riding his into the conference hall when two nasty photographers appeared from nowhere and began snapping.

Notoriously camera shy, the brave MP let them take some pictures, and then let them take some more.

Hacks observing the scene were not impressed.

Lembit’s bid for party president in mind, one commented: “I don’t know who Ros is, but she has my vote.”

Baroness Ros Scott seems popular with the Libs – “I’m For Ros” badges seem to be everywhere at this conference.

Slightly disappointing turnout at the Equality and Human Rights Commission drinks reception last night.

As with every conference, there is always lots going on at the same time.

Chair Trevor Phillips was in sparkling form, chatting to gay activists and NUS President Wes Streeting about the current ban on blood donations from gay men.

A whole table of full wine glasses proved a challenge to the collective EHRC fans in attendance, and to our shame we didn’t manage to drink them all.
