During a stop on her True Colours tour recently, gay rights advocate Cyndi Lauper blasted President George W Bush, calling him homophobic and anti-American.

The True Colours tour was organised to raise awareness of homophobia and gay rights.

Lauper said President Bush is guilty of promoting “hate and fear” and his discriminatory attitude against gays and lesbians makes her “blood boil.”

Speaking to The Times Lauper claimed the gay community as her own, saying: “This community for me is my beloved community.”

Lauper said her long commitment to supporting LGBT causes stems for a lifetime spent surrounded by gay friends and family.

She even tried to be gay herself, but found she just wasn’t wired that way.

“I tried kissing girls,” Lauper told The Times.

“But it didn’t feel right for me and eventually I was forced to come out as a heterosexual.”

As part of her dedication to promoting equality for the gay and lesbian community, Lauper organised the annual True Colours tour in 2007 to help raise awareness of homophobia.

This year’s tour features such performers as the B-52s, Rosie O’Donnell, Andy Bell, Tegan and Sara, Colton Ford, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Deborah Cox and the Indigo Girls.

In the midst of this year’s True Colours tour, Lauper spoke out to Times reporter Paul Burston about her feelings regarding current American President George W. Bush.

“I have been running with this community all my life,” Lauper said, “and when I hear people like George Bush talk about the gay community being anti-American it makes my blood boil.

“The guy who saved the White House, one of the heroes who crashed that plane on 9/11, was gay – the rugby player Mark Bingham, who died on United 93,” Lauper continued.

“And does Bush ever mention that? …That gay guy saved his lousy ass. And this guy who says he prays to God, this guy who promotes hate and fear, this guy we call our President… This guy is the true anti-American.”
