Scottish government pledges extra funds for gay schemes
The Scottish government is to award £6.1m of extra funding to equality groups including those aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.
The Scottish Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell said that the money would be spent on improving equality for women, particularly Muslim women, the disabled and LGBT groups.
£3m will be spent on nine projects to tackle sex discrimination and nine LGBT projects will receive £1.7m. One project includes a scheme to reduce domestic violence within gay households.
Mr Maxwell said: “The Scottish Government believes a successful Scotland is civilised, fair and inclusive and provides equal opportunity and choice for all its people.
“The kind of Scotland I want to live in, is a Scotland in which all people can benefit from all the country has to offer.”
Scotland, since devolution has shown a progressive attitude towards LGBT issues including pre-empting England and Wales’ equalisation of the age of consent.
Homosexuality was illegal in Scotland until 1980.
