More than two decades ago, a crazed fan of Oscar winner Jodie Foster alleged he shot president Ronald Reagan on behalf of his favourite actress.

Now, another “fan” of Foster has mailed a bomb threat to a Los Angeles airport, and mentioned her by name in the letter.

Michael Smegal was busted yesterday for mailing a bomb threat to Van Nuys Airport back in December, according to E! Online.

This is after he promised postal inspectors he’d kick a year-long habit of mailing anonymous letters to Foster back in 2005.

According to law enforcement officials, one of those letters to Foster included a phone number for a prepaid cell phone, requesting that the Silence of the Lambs actress call him.

“Law enforcement called the number and spoke to an individual who identified himself as Michael Smegal,” FBI Special Agent Joseph Altman wrote in an affidavit released on Tuesday.

“Smegal spoke with the agent and used the phone to send photographs of himself and his dog.”

The letter, according to law enforcement officials, claimed there was going to be a gas bomb released at Van Nuys Airport, a landing spot for mostly private planes.

According to reports, it matched nearly 100 identical letters sent to various celebrities and local businesses late last year.

If convicted of making a bomb threat, Smegal faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 (£123,000) fine.
