Leicester to host conference on gay discrimination
A one-day event later this year aims to bring together staff from Leicester employers to learn practical ways of tackling prejudice and ensuring services are welcoming to all.
The ‘A Life In A Day – Practical Ways to Make Your Services LGBT Friendly’ conference is being hosted by Leicester Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Centre as part of a lottery-funded project and will take place at Leicester City Football Club on Thursday 5th June.
MP Sir Peter Soulsby, who represents Leicester South, will give the opening address.
The event is supported by Leicester City, Leicestershire County and Rutland County Councils.
Diversity champion and adviser to the Metropolitan Police and the British Army on equality issues Linda Bellos and trans activist Christine Burns MBE will speak at the event.
Delegates will also attend seminars led by local workers who have developed good practice in tackling discrimination against LGBT people.
Siân Lambert, Policy Development Officer at Leicester Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Centre, said:
“Legislation which has come into force in the last few years has rightfully outlawed discrimination against people on the grounds of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
“However, many workers are unsure of what they can do to ensure their services do not discriminate.
“‘A Life In A Day’ will be the first time that organisations from across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have come together to share experiences and learn easy ways in which they can make their services more welcoming.
“Whether you work in the statutory sector, in education or healthcare, or for a voluntary organisation or a private business, this conference will give you the skills to ensure that the services you are delivering are free from prejudice.”
