Police in Manchester have bailed a man arrested on suspicion of rape.

Shortly after 2.30am on Tuesday police received reports that a man had been raped at the Basement Complex, a gay sauna on Tariff Street.

“An investigation was launched and a 31-year-old man from the Miles Platting area was arrested on suspicion of rape on Wednesday 30 January 2008,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

“He has been bailed until 11th March 2008 pending further inquiries.”

On Tuesday police sealed off an area in the centre of the city around the sauna, which describes itself as “one of the largest gay and bisexual saunas in the north west” and is gay-owned and operated.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact police, who have interviewed the victim of the alleged attack.

A spokesman for the Basement Complex said:

“Throughout the investigation all possible assistance was afforded to the police.

“Officers from Greater Manchester Police discharged their duties with total professionalism and respect for the anonymity of our clients.”

Greater Manchester Police said that anyone who has been a victim of rape or sexual assault can contact on 0161 872 5050 or 999 in an emergency.

There is another Basement Sauna branch in Leeds.
