Welsh gay project closes due to lack of support

PinkNews Staff Writer January 18, 2008

In a short press statement published online yesterday, the Rainbow Project South Wales announced it had dissolved itself at the end of December.

The charity had been in existence for at least ten years and gained charitable status four years ago.

It was working towards opening a lesbian, gay and bisexual community centre in Cardiff.

“Sadly, the Rainbow Project South Wales was dissolved on December 31st 2007 because of lack of support for the various events held over the last 12 months and the failure to secure a wider membership,” the group said.

“The Rainbow Project Trustees would like to thank all who have been involved in the work of the Project and who have supported its events over the years.”

The existing funds of the Rainbow Project have been transferred to Terence Higgins Trust.

Over the years it ran some memorable fundraising events, such as an evening with poet and singer Labi Siffre, a champagne cruise in Cardiff Bay and a comedy night with Claire Summerskill.

However, several recent events such as a celeidh and a disco lost money, and Rainbow Project decided to disband.
