Torchwood creator’s new gay drama on hold

The creator of Queer as Folk said that he will not start his working on a new proposed gay drama for several years.

Russell T Davies made the comments at the press launch of series 2 of Torchwood, which will return on BBC2 in January.

In October he had revealed that he was thinking of writing a script about “forty-something gay men.”

But during Monday’s press conference, the 44 year-old writer stressed that, although he still intended to write the new announced drama about gay people, it was too early to discuss it.

“There will be a gay drama one day, but it’s years off,” he said, according to The Stage.

“I know, it just keeps on getting reported. You know what it’s like, it gets reported once, and then every clipping reports that, and then it’s practically written.”

In October a BBC spokesperson confirmed that Davies was developing script ideas for a new project, but was unable to give more specific details, saying that it was at a very early stage and that nothing had been decided yet.

The writer of successful Queer As Folk, the revived Doctor Who and the spin-off Torchwood, revealed during an interview with the Guardian some of the ideas behind his new project.

“It’s going to be about forty-something gay men and how jealous they are of gay teenagers,” he said.

He added that the inspiration for the new series had come from the story of one of his friends, a former Mr Gay UK who had split with his boyfriend.

At this week’s conference, BBC2 Controller Roly Keating said that each episode of Torchwood will also have an edited version for older children.

But it was confirmed that gay relationships will not be cut, as “they are just part of everyday life.”
