Scott Caan has apologised for calling a photographer a “faggot.”

The 31-year-old son of Hollywood legend James Caan, who starred in all three of the Ocean’s movies alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt, also offered $10,000 (£4,890) to fight the reporter who had taken pictures of him eating a cheeseburger.

He told website TMZ.com, who hosted footage of the incident: “I am sorry for using such a derogatory word.

“I was being harassed by a paparazzi, and unfortunately, the word slipped out.

“I don’t ever condone the use of that word and I deeply apologise to anyone whom I may have offended.”

He is not the first high profile actor to have made such a public apology for using homophobic language.

Actor Isaiah Washington was accused in October last year of referring to gay co-star TR Knight as a faggot on the set of Grey’s Anatomy.

Washington released a statement the same month saying: “I sincerely regret my actions and the unfortunate use of words during the recent incident on set.”

In January, however, he surprised reporters at the Golden Globes by denying that he had ever called his colleague “a faggot.”

Isaiah made a second public apology after television network, ABC, and gay media watchdog, GLAAD, criticised these remarks.
