The Anglican Bishop of Manchester will be among the speakers at unique conference in the city next week.

Final preparations for this year’s annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Health Summit are being made for the two-day event which takes place at Manchester Town Hall over the 20th and 21st August.

The summit, presented with the theme Choices, Voices, Knowledge and Power, will host 16 workshops and 30 presenters covering a range of issues on health inequalities experienced by LGBT people.

Speakers include the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, Bishop of Manchester, Maura Buchanan, President of The Royal College of Nursing, Councillor Paul Fairweather from Manchester City Council, Paul Martin, Chief Executive of the Lesbian and Gay Foundation and Ruth Hunt, Head of Research for gay equality organisation Stonewall.

These include Homophobia in Healthcare Settings, LGBT Issues and Education, LGBT Mental Health, Crime and the LGBT Community, Alcohol, Drugs and Domestic Abuse and Lesbian Health Issues.

300 people are expected to attend the event which is sponsored and supported by the Department of Health, Manchester City Council, Lesbian and Gay Foundation, Terrence Higgins Trust, Press for Change and Health First.

It aims to provide information and training on LGBT health issues such as disability, crime, mental health, the impact of stereotypes and identity, ageing and drugs.

Dr Justin Varney, co-chair of the Gay Lesbian Association of Doctors and Dentists told PinkNews.co.uk:

“A second year and the diversity of the subjects, the people, and the impact of the summit keeps growing.

“This event is a unique, safe, respectful space for all parts of our vibrant, and at times challenging, community to come together to learn, share and build bridges, alliances and friendships”

Last year’s inaugural health summit in London was attended by more than 150 delegates and formed the basis for a successful annual event on the UK health calendar.
