Green MSP attacked over opposition to Catholic schools
An MSP who could be a member of the Executive in the next Scottish Parliament has been branded a militant homosexual.
Patrick Harvie, a Green Party MSP, has campaigned for gay adoption and for homophobic abuse to be made a hate crime.
The party has called for a ban on state funding for Catholic schools, and Mr Harvie is in the firing line because he supports the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA.)
They believe gay children are at risk in Catholic schools, due to bullying which goes unchecked, leading to depression and many suicides.
Yesterday’s Daily Mail claimed: “The alarming revelations raise fresh questions over his judgment, credibility and ministerial suitability.
“Green MSP Patrick Harvie’s militant homosexual agenda has hijacked a party that should be concerned with the environment.”
It is likely that after the Scottish elections a “traffic-light” coalition between Labour, the Scottish National Party and the Green Party will be formed.
If that happens, Harvie, an MSP since 2003, may well gain an influential position in the Scottish Executive.
A spokesman for the Catholic Church told The Daily Mail: “The Greens’ mentality on education that parents should be placed on the substitute bench as the state takes over their role in educating children is literally fascist.
“There is something sinister behind these attacks on diversity in education a sense of Catholic-phobia.
“Behind the attack on Catholic schools and the Trojan horse of homophobic bullying is the idea of sexual anarchy.”
The paper also claimed Mr Harvie, who is bisexual, had been branded a fascist by an un-named source.
Patrick Harvie told PinkNews.co.uk: “It wouldn’t be an election campaign without The Daily Mail whipping up some old school homophobia.
“The only thing that annoyed me was that they called me a fascist, a term which I find very offensive. And that statement was attributed to an unnamed spokesman.”
He added: “If someone wants to call me a fascist, they should have the nerve to put their name to it.
“Equality is a very important principle in the Green Party’s manifesto, and I’m very proud to be standing for a party which has supported me as an openly gay candidate from day one.
“We certainly won’t be scared off our equality agenda by The Daily Mail.“
The 129-member Scottish parliament is made up of 73 constituencies who elect one MSP by a straight majority.
Eight regions also elect seven MSPs each by proportional representation.
Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the SNP, the Conservative Unionist Party, the Scottish Green Party, the Scottish Socialist Party, Solidarity, the Socialist Labour Party, the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party, Scottish Voice, UKIP, SCP, the BNP and Independent Muhammad Shoaib are standing for election in the Glasgow region.
The elections for the Parliament are on Thursday 3rd May.
