Media watchdog opposes homophobic platform

A gay media watchdog is urging the community to protest against Time magazine allowing ‘family values’ fundamentalist James Dobson to contribute to the publication.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) was outraged this week after Mr Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, wrote an article criticising US Vice-President Dick Cheney’s lesbian daughter over her parenting plans.

It comes after Mary Cheney announced she is having a baby with her partner Heather Poe.

Writing in the magazine, Mr Donson said: “With all due respect to Cheney and her partner, Heather Poe, the majority of more than 30 years of social-science evidence indicates that children do best on every measure of well-being when raised by their married mother and father.”

An alert on the GLAAD website calls for Dobson and other anti-gay activists to be stopped from spreading ‘misleading evidence.’

“Dobson’s wilful misrepresentation of social science research is both disturbing and predictable. And Time magazine’s decision to extend Dobson a platform without holding him to basic standards of accuracy is deeply troubling and must be addressed. Over the past three days, GLAAD has been discussing this issue with Time’s editors — and we need you to share your concerns as well.”
