Liverpool plans gay quarter

Liverpool councillors are proposing a pedestrianised gay street in the city centre.

The proposal is being put forward by Labour councillors at a meeting next week and if approved would see Stanley Street becoming Liverpool’s answer to Manchester’s gay village in Canal Street.

It reflects an increase in gay businesses around the area, and the men behind the scheme Cllr Steve Munby and Cllr Paul Brant say it will help improve nightlife.

Cllr Brant told the Liverpool Echo: “There would have to be full consultation with businesses before anything is done. I would like to see the street fully pedestrianised, but there could be controlled access with rising bollards for deliveries and businesses.

“A pedestrian area based on Stanley Street would add to city nightlife.”

The plan comes as the city prepares itself to be the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
