A convicted murderer who absconded from a South Wales open prison in July has been found in the Channel Islands, Paul Hunt writes.

Lee Dewhurst, 35, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester was found in Jersey and arrested by police after escaping from Prescoed prison where he was serving a life sentence for the murder of a gay man in 1992.

Gwent Police officers are travelling to Jersey. Dewhurst is expected to face a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

During his disappearance, police warned the public, particularly the gay community, not to approach Dewhurst.

West Yorkshire Police also want to speak to Dewhurst in connection with a series of robberies targeting gay men in York, Huddersfield and Halifax.

Police believe on each occasion the robber had struck up a

relationship with his male victims before threatening and robbing them, sometimes in public areas and on other occasions at their home addresses.

At the time police were warning gay the community about the potential danger, Dewhurst was reported to have been seen at several Gay Pride events over the summer months in West Yorkshire.

Seven inmates have escaped from the prison in the last three months, including two child rapists.
