Gay comic and ex-Pop World presenter, Simon Amstell, has been announced as the new host of music quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks.

Amstell, who guest hosted an episode of the show in March, joins the show as full time host, replacing Mark Lamarr, from the next series which will be shown on BBC2 later this year.

Recovering from a successful stint at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, he said: “I hope I can be the one exception to the universal, exceptionless rule that when a new host takes over an old show it is a horrible embarrassing disaster.”

Bill Bailey and Phill Jupitus continue in their roles of team captains, joined each week by celebrity guests showing off their musical know-how and demonstrating why pop music should never be taken too seriously.

Viewers can expect more anarchic and unpredictable music trivia rounds, regular features such as ‘intros’ and ‘identity parade’ and of course more celebrity ribbing and musical shenanigans.

Amstell is a former XFM radio presenter and has also appeared on Nickelodeon before his most recent stint as co-presenter on Channel 4’s Pop World with Miquita Oliver, both left the show earlier this year.
