WorldPride today played host to Israel’s first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) multi-faith convention.

Participants of all religions converged in Jerusalem for the conference titled Reclaiming Our Faith and Our Heritage to discuss issues of homophobia and bigotry.

Representatives of different faiths explored the ways in which religious texts and holy scripts call for the respect of all human beings and their right to live in dignity. The convocation aimed to send the message that LGBT rights are anchored within the religious teachings of the three religions formed in Jerusalem.

Speakers will include Reverend Pat Bumgardner, senior pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of New York, Irshad Manji author of “The Trouble With Islam Today, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, Rabbi Ayelet Cohen of the Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, Father James Alison author of “Faith Beyond Resentment: Fragments, Catholic and Gay, Rabbi David Lazar of the Masorti Conservative Congregation, Tifereth Shalom Rabbinic Chaplain of Israel’s AIDS Task Force and Rabbi Steve Greenberg author of “Wrestling With God and Men: Homosexuality in the Jewish Tradition.”

Events and conferences continue until August 11 2006.
