Stonewall FC celebrate golden Gay Games performance
Gay football team Stonewall FC have this week been celebrating a gold medal won at last month’s Gay Games in Chicago.
The side entered into the Men’s Division One to compete for the title of World and Olympic Champions, and made it into the final with an un-beaten record.
In the final Stonewall FC faced the Florida team and ended the 90 minutes with the score at 0-0. Into the first half of extra time the Florida team scored 1-0. Stonewall then responded with a goal that was disallowed.
The team remained calm and was set on bringing the football gold home to England. In the 2nd half of extra time Stonewall FC went on to score 3 goals in 10 minutes and claimed the title of World and Olympic Champions.
Stonewall FC was started in 1991 and currently field a 1st and Reserve team regularly in the Middlesex County League where they have achieved league and cup wins at a high level of amateur football. By competing at this level of amateur football Stonewall FC challenges the long held stereotypes and prejudices which are endemic in football culture.
Club chairman Andy Walmsley said: “This was a fantastic tournament and a great achievement for the club.
“We hope to continue to show that there is a strong talent of gay footballers and it is important that the football world realises our on going achievements”
