The UCLA Student Coalition for Marriage Equality (SCME) will host a public same-sex wedding in Los Angeles this week, days before the US Senate votes on banning gay marriage.

Dr Patricia Alford-Keating, a counsellor for UCLA Student Psychological Services, and her partner Shannon Lea Keating will reaffirm their original wedding vows made 22 years ago in front of students, faculty, and staff. The ceremony will be real in every way, except for the lack of a marriage license issued by the state.

Patricia and Shannon’s wedding follows the success of SCME’s first same-sex wedding held in June 2005. Undergraduate UCLA students Sean and William were married in front of 350 people in a beautiful ceremony.

This ceremony on June 2 2006 comes just days before the US Senate votes on the Federal Marriage Amendment on June 6 2006, which would define marriage as the union between a man and a woman, thereby making any same-sex marriage in the US illegal.

The amendment could possibly have implications for domestic partnerships between same-sex couples as well.
