Elton John’s movie pitch for Gnomeo and Juliet has been given the go ahead by Miramax Films, despite being rejected by parent company, Walt Disney, last month.

The play on the William Shakespeare classic, Romeo and Juliet, tells the classic love story in the setting of a gnome garden.

John has even managed to get actress Kate Winslet, who starred in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet in 1996, to appear as Juliet, in the Cg-animated feature.

The gay star said in a statement, “I am very excited about working with Miramax.

“Gnomeo is an edgy concept and Miramax is the perfect home to push the envelope in animation.”

Miramax will produce the film in Britain, with Tim Rice collaborating with Elton John on the songs.
