American public want gays in the military
2:55 PM — A new poll of Americans has revealed that nearly half do not support the current US military policy of barring openly gay people from serving.The Harris Interactive survey, conducted last month, found that 55% of the 2,337 people questioned felt openly gay, bisexual or lesbian personnel should be allowed to serve, reports the Wall Street Journal. Only 18% of respondents felt that gay people should not be allowed to serve at all.

Nepal grants dual gender citizenship
9:40 AM — A 40-year-old in Nepal has been granted citizenship as both a man and a woman. It is thought up to 400 other Nepalese are seeking the same dual recognition.Chanda Rani received the official government document last week, where Rani's gender is listed as both male and female, announced the Blue Diamond Society, a gay rights group in Nepal."This is a landmark victory in our struggle," said Sunil Panta, president of the society.

11:27 AM — A lesbian couple have become Mexico's first state recognised same-sex married couple.25-year-old Karina Almaguer and 30-year Karla Lopez travelled to Saltillo, Coahuilla from their home state of Tamaulipas, the only Mexican state to recognise gay marriage.The ceremony was witnessed by Coahuilla congresswoman Julieta Lopez.

10:39 AM — A 29-year-old man who had previously been convicted of sex offences shaved his entire body hair and used make-up to cover up stubble posed as a 12-year-old boy for two years, police in Arizona claim.Neil Havens Rodreick II, who is five foot eight, posed as school boy Casey Price at the Imagine School in Phoenix, Arizona, for four months, before being expelled for poor attendance.

4:50 PM — The federal government of Australia is to bring forward legislation that will ensure that foreign children adopted by a same-sex couples will not be recognised as having two parents.An amendment the Family Law Act will bar any legal recognition in Australia of adoptions by same-sex couples which have taken place in other countries.Senator Andrew Bartlett and gay activist Rodney Croome drew attention to the proposed new law on their blogs.

12:30 PM — The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, avoided a question about the comments by Moscow's mayor that gay people are Satanic.Instead Mr Putin joked that Russia's low birth rate may be due to homosexual people.At a news conference in the Kremlin, the President gave his backing to mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who has spoken of his hatred for gay and lesbian people on many occasions.

London unites with Riga Pride
5:14 PM — The gay and lesbian communities of London and Riga are to come together in a unique twinning partnership to support equality and tolerance in the two capital cities.Pride London and the Mayor of London will sign a statement of unity with Riga Pride at a ceremony in the Latvian capital next month.Last July the gay and lesbian community in Riga were banned from celebrating Pride and suffered violent oppression from homophobic mobs.
Canada lifts same-sex immigration ban 1
3:27 PM — Canadians who married their gay or lesbian partners abroad will now be able to sponsor their immigration to Canada.The government has rescinded a policy that banned same-sex married couples from being treated equally to heterosexual spouses.Opposition MP Bill Siksay announced on Tuesday that the government had decided to remove the discriminatory immigration directive and treat gay and straight couples equally in this regard.
Gay Mexican granted asylum in the US
10:57 AM — A 38-year-old man has been granted asylum in the United States after a court accepted he would be persecuted if he returned to Mexico.Jorge Soto Vega entered the USA illegally in 1988, and had previously had an asylum application turned down by a judge who said he would have had to make his sexuality obvious to face persecution.At an immigration hearing on Tuesday Mr Vega was finally told he can remain in America.

Gay activists welcome first EU equality summit
2:43 PM — European and UK gay rights organisations have welcomed the first EU summit on equality, which began in Brussels today.450 delegates from across Europe launched the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All at the summit, which is a joint initiative by the European Commission and the German Presidency of the EU.Representatives from the European branch of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) are attending.

1:48 PM — Stefano Gabbana, of DolceGabbana fame, has rounded on the Vatican for trying to stop Italian gay and lesbian people getting equal rights.The designer, in an interview with newspaper La Stampa, argued that the Roman Catholic church is trying to fight against love itself.Mr Gabbana was the sexual as well as design partner of Domenico Dolce for 19 years.
Gay couple register as married in Israel
11:40 AM — An English immigrant to Israel has had his marriage registered by officials in Jerusalem.Binyamin Rose and his American husband Avi have successfully registered themselves as a married couple.This is the first time since a Supreme Court decision three months ago ruled marriages performed abroad are legal inside Israel that two gay men have been registered as married.
L Word star quits show and reveals baby plans
11:14 AM — Bisexual actress Kristanna Loken has told producers of The L Word she will not be returning for another series of the hit show, which follows the lives and loves of a group of Los Angeles lipstick lesbians.Loken has also revealed that she is ready to be a mother, and already has a sperm donor in mind.She is best known for her role as T-X in Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines.

2007 Moscow Pride will go ahead vow activists 4
2:50 PM — The organisers of Moscow Pride have vowed to hold the event in 2007, as they formally start proceedings at the European Court of Human Rights concerning last year's Pride.They are also considering appealing to the Russian Supreme Court in parallel with their European action.In May 2006 the first Pride march in the city was beset by violence after Moscow's mayor refused to grant a permit.
