China’s first gay TV show 1
10:35 AM — An hour-long internet television programme to be broadcast this week will be the first in China aimed at gay men. Connecting Homosexuals will be presented by out gay man and AIDS activist Didier Zheng and will be shown on www.phoenixtv.com on Thursday.Mr Zheng, who was educated in Paris, explained that he hopes gay people will gain more visibility and recognition in Chinese society.

Court rejects Moscow Pride appeal 1
5:23 PM — Moscow City Court has upheld a ban on a gay rights march in the city last year.Organisers have vowed to fight on and are taking their case to the Russian Supreme Court, where they hope to receive a more "objective" ruling.Today's decision is the latest in a string of court actions regarding last year's events.

4:29 PM — A spokesman for Sweden's royals has confirmed that American preacher Rev Fred Phelps has been faxing hate messages to them.Phelps and his Westboro Baptist church are best known for their "God Hates Fags" campaigns in the United States.They were the subject of a BBC2 documentary by Louis Theroux broadcast last night.

2:58 PM — The estranged wife of gay ex-New Jersey governor James McGreevey did not know her husband was carrying on a relationship with a man, says the ghostwriter for her upcoming memoir.Elizabeth Stone, the uncredited co-author of Silent Partner, due out May 1st, spoke about writing Dina Matos McGreevey's book Saturday.She spoke during a Fordham University panel discussion on memoir writing for students and alumni.

1:38 PM — The choice of a drag act to represent the Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest has sparked protests.Nationalists took to the streets yesterday to demand that the country withdraw from the competition. They claim that the female impersonator will damage the Ukraine's reputation.Verka Serdyuchka is a hugely popular entertainer in the country and in Russia.
Riga Pride attacker to be prosecuted
12:01 PM — A right-wing nationalist who allegedly orchestrated last year's attack on a gay Pride march in Latvia is to be prosecuted for inciting public disorder.Viktors Birze, who heads the National Force Union, is to face charges in relation to events last July.Gay men and lesbians were refused permission to march in Riga on 22nd July by city officials.
Bishop compares gay rights to incest 11
11:03 AM — The new head of the Italian Bishops Conference has been heavily criticised by politicians for comparing moves to give gay couples some rights to incest and child abuse.Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco, who was appointed last month, is in charge of the Roman Catholic church campaign to block a new law that would allow unmarried couples, gay and straight, some legal protection.

3:28 PM — The veteran actor Fred Thompson, best known for his work on TV show Law and Order, is considering running for the Republican nomination for President of the United States.Thompson, 65, is a former Senator from Tennessee and starred opposite Harrison Ford in The Hunt for Red October. He has combined entertainment work with law and politics throughout his adult life.

3:05 PM — 27 people were arrested yesterday during a protest demanding health care for all in the United States.The event commemorated the 20th anniversary of ACT UP's AIDS activism and direct action.The activists were demanding also demanding single-payer national health insurance and drug price controls.

12:25 PM — Less than a week after her murder, Ruby Ordenana, a Latina transgender woman, was called a "psychopath" and a "freak" by a nationally syndicated radio host in the United States.Michael Savage. went on to link the victim and transgender people generally with the Columbine massacre, saying "kids shoot each other there with black raincoats."Columbine in Colorado was the scene of a 1999 school shooting in which 13 people were killed.

11:13 AM — The impending elections in the African state of Nigeria could mean that a draconian law banning gay lifestyles may not become law.The federal polls are due to be held on 21st Arpil. Nigerians will vote for a new President and elect both houses of the National Assembly.The Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill was debated on the 22nd March but as the Assembly is now out of session, it is hoped the bill will die.

10:49 AM — Police in Sydney targeted the gay community for the second time in a month yesterday, with a drugs bust marring the start of an all-gay cruise holiday.2007 is an election year in Australia, and the Sydney force have been involved in a number of highly visible and publicised operations showing they are tough on drugs.

10:24 AM — The wife of Moscow Mayor's spokesman Sergei Tsoi has surprised gay activists in Russia by saying she might attend the Pride event her husband's boss has banned.Pop-singer Anita Tsoi told a newspaper that she enjoys playing gigs in gay clubs, and defended gay people against the Mayor's accusation that they are "satanic."At the beginning of this month the mayors of London, Paris, Berlin and Moscow held their annual meeting.

4:09 PM — Gay athletes have been a big topic of conversation for the past few months.Most of the debate and talk was sparked by the recent announcement by John Amaechi the first former NBA basketball player to come out publicly as gay.There was much aftermath to the announcement including some perceived homophobic behaviour.

6:18 PM — The Italian bishop's conference has today released a statement saying that the government attempt to legally recognise civil unions is unacceptable.The bishops called the idea that Catholic politicians might vote in favour of the proposals "incomprehensible."Italy has been gripped by the conflict between traditionalists and progressives.

4:20 PM — A row has erupted in Latvia after the US government denied links with an anti-gay preacher who travelled to the country claiming to be an official White House envoy.Kenneth Hutcherson, founder of the Antioch Bible Church, is an outspoken opponent of gay rights.He travelled to Latvia in earlier this month at the invitation of the New Generational Church.
