5:56 PM — Japanese nationals can now wed their same-sex foreign partners in countries where same-sex marriage is permitted. According to reports, an unnamed government official said today that the justice ministry has instructed local authorities to issue documents pertaining to marriage to gay couples planning to wed abroad.

New Hampshire House votes to approve gay marriage
6:49 PM — The New Hampshire State House today voted to approve gay marriage. The bill, if passed, would make it the third US state to allow gay couples to marry.
French Senate votes to recognise British civil partnerships 6
1:59 PM — France may soon recognise British civil partnerships if an amendment to the law is passed. Currently, British recognises French partnerships, known as Pacs (Pacte Civil de Solidarité) but France does not reciprocate this recognition.
Mayor Bloomberg shows support for gay marriage in New York 2
1:17 PM — New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has urged the state to pass a bill legalising gay marriage. Speaking last night at the annual dinner of the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender Community Center in Manhattan, he said lawmakers must "do the right thing".
Vermont governor to veto gay marriage 12
10:13 AM — Governor Jim Douglas has announced his intention to veto the gay marriage bill if it passes the Legislature. At a news conference yesterday, the Republican governor said that the state's current civil partnership provision gave gay couples adequate rights and added that marriage should "remain between a man and a woman".

The Democrat made his announcement at a meeting in a Manhattan restaurant but did not release news of his change of opinion until after it was reported by Empire State Pride Agenda this week.

Fifty-eight per cent of residents voted against cancelling the anti-discrimination protections Gainesville extends to gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people in order to conform to the Florida Civil Rights Act.

12:19 PM — The death of a New York radio newsreader has been described by authorities as a "gay slaying", according to reports. George Weber, 47, who worked for ABC, was found stabbed to death in his Brooklyn apartment on Sunday.

Study explodes gay affluence myth 3
2:39 PM — A study of lesbian, gay and bisexual couples in America has suggested that they are as likely, or more likely, to be living in poverty as straight couples. It found that 24 per cent of lesbians and bisexual women are poor, while 19 per cent of heterosexual women experience poverty. Around 15 per cent of gay and bisexual men are living in poverty, compared to 13 percent of heterosexual males.

New Hampshire introduces bill to protect trans people 1
5:51 PM — The US state of New Hampshire is introducing a bill to protect trans people from discrimination. The bill means the words "gender identity" or "gender expression" will be added to current laws protecting from discrimination on the basis of sex, age, race, creed, colour, sexual orientation or religion.
