New South Wales government upholds gay adoption ban 7
4:13 PM — The Australian state of New South Wales has opted to continue a ban on gay couples adopting. Although a parliamentary inquiry had recommended that changing the law would be in the best interests of children, the state government said there was not enough evidence of support for it.
California gay marriage trial will be on YouTube 5
11:45 AM — A judge has ruled that next week's trial on California's gay marriage ban will be shown on YouTube. Defenders of Proposition 8, which restricts marriage to a man and a woman, had claimed that broadcasting proceedings could lead to intimidation of witnesses.

Portugal expected to approve gay marriage this week 14
6:30 PM — Portugal is expected to approve gay marriage this Friday when a bill comes up for debate in parliament. It is thought the law is almost certain to pass, as left-wing parties who are supportive of gay marriage occupy a majority of seats.

5:46 PM — Lesbian actress Cynthia Nixon will be kicking off a campaign to repeal Florida's ban on gays and lesbians adopting. The Sex and the City star will kick off the American Civil Liberties Union's three-year campaign to end the ban this weekend at South Beach’s Shore Club.
Amnesty International joins calls for release of gay Malawi couple 4
5:15 PM — Human rights organisation Amnesty International has joined the calls for a gay couple in Malawi to be released from prison. The group said that Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, who were arrested on December 28th, were "prisoners of conscience".

12:47 PM — New Jersey's Senate will vote tomorrow on gay marriage in a final attempt to pass the bill before a new governor takes office. A vote was cancelled in early December after Democrats were reportedly concerned the bill did not have enough votes to pass.

11:43 AM — Lawmakers in the US state of Rhode Island have approved a law to allow people in gay relationships to make funeral arrangements for their partners. They overrode a veto from Governor Don Carcieri.

6:30 PM — Amanda Simpson, the trans woman appointed by President Barack Obama, has said she does not want to be seen as a "token". She was appointed to the role of senior technical advisor to the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security.
Warning over high HIV rates in gay African men
6:28 PM — A study in the medical journal The Lancet has warned that HIV rates among gay men in some parts of Africa are ten times higher than their straight counterparts.

3:08 PM — The heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune has been found dead at her Los Angeles home. Casey Johnson, 30, had a history of drug abuse. Police said she appeared to have died from natural causes, although a cause of death has not been determined.
Court case on California marriage ban to be heard next week 8
1:11 PM — Next Monday, a federal court will examine for the first time whether the US constitution allows states to ban gay marriage. The case, brought by two gay couples who argue that California's ban violates their constitutional rights, will be heard on January 11th and is expected to last two to three weeks.

7:20 PM — A gay couple in Malawi who were jailed for holding a wedding ceremony have said they are being beaten in prison. Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza were denied bail and will face trial next week for indecency charges.
Obama appoints trans woman to Department of Commerce 27
4:07 PM — US President Barack Obama has appointed a trans woman to the role of senior technical advisor to the Department of Commerce. Amanda Simpson is on the board of directors of the National Centre for Transgender Equality and has worked in the aerospace and defence industry for 30 years.
