3:09 PM — The Massachusetts attorney general, Martha Coakley, requested that a federal court in Boston yesterday strike down the federal ban on gay marriage, arguing that it interfered with the rights of individual states to define marriage and have those unions recognised by the federal government.

Canadian researchers argue for lifting of blood ban for gay men 9
3:47 PM — A team of investigators in the online edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal has argued that the lifetime ban on gay men giving blood should be replaced with a deferral for those who have been in a stable, monogamous relationship for at least one year. In Canada, the USA and the UK, gay men and any other men who partake in sex with men are permanently banned from giving blood.

White House supports repeal of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy 5
9:43 AM — The White House has given its full support to legislation that would repeal the ban on openly gay people serving in the US military. President Obama ordered a review of the policy, directing Defence Secretary Robert Gates to gauge the attitudes of military personnel and the effect on morale that repealing the ban might have.

Maryland voters support gay marriage 1
4:02 PM — Voters in the US state of Maryland now narrowly support allowing gay couples to marry, a survey suggests. The Washington Post poll of 1,030 adults, taken last week, found that 46 per cent support allowing same-sex marriage, compared to 44 per cent against and ten per cent who said they had no opinion.

Progress for Argentina’s gay marriage bill 4
