    Golden Girl Rue McClanahan dies 15

    5:24 PM — Golden Girls actress Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76, her manager confirmed this afternoon. The star, who played Blanche Devereaux in the 1980s sitcom, had a massive stroke at 1am on Thursday morning.

    3:53 PM — Lifting America's ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood could provide an extra 219,000 pints a year, a report says. It also estimates that organ donations could increase by 2.9 per cent annually, meaning around 900 additional transplants could take place each year.

    5:27 PM — Gay US soldiers Dan Choi and Jim Pietrangelo entered their sixth day of a hunger strike today over the military gay ban. The pair, who chained themselves to the White House fence recently, announced last Thursday they were going on hunger strike and say they will not eat until President Barack Obama meets their demands.

    4:37 PM — Madonna has thanked her fans for supporting her call for Malawi to release a couple jailed for homosexuality offences. Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga were pardoned by Malawian president Bingu wa Mutharika last week after being sentenced to 14 years of hard labour.

    11:26 AM — The Catholic Church in America has been accused of effectively barring celibate gay priests by asking new recruits a battery of deeply personal questions about their sexuality. Prospective priests are being asked the questions in an attempt to weed out those with paedophile tendencies but the church has been accused of "scapegoating" gay men in the process.

    3:47 PM — A team of investigators in the online edition of the Canadian Medical Association Journal has argued that the lifetime ban on gay men giving blood should be replaced with a deferral for those who have been in a stable, monogamous relationship for at least one year. In Canada, the USA and the UK, gay men and any other men who partake in sex with men are permanently banned from giving blood.

  • White House supports repeal of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy 5

    President Obama supports the repeal of the ban on LGB people in the US military

    9:43 AM — The White House has given its full support to legislation that would repeal the ban on openly gay people serving in the US military. President Obama ordered a review of the policy, directing Defence Secretary Robert Gates to gauge the attitudes of military personnel and the effect on morale that repealing the ban might have.

    11:14 AM — The second out gay bishop in the US has been ordained. Mary Glasspool, 56, was ordained as assistant Los Angeles bishop at a ceremony in California on Saturday.
