11:22 AM — The founding president of US group Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has died at the age of 90. Adele Starr reacted badly when her son came out in 1974 but overcame her negative feelings to establish the support group for the loved ones of gays and lesbians.

3:17 PM — A prominent gay journalist in San Diego has been found dead after apparently jumping from a seven-storey hotel. Michael Portantino, 52, was the publisher of the weekly San Diego's Gay and Lesbian Times, which he bought in 1989.

5:57 PM — The funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, former wife of United States vice-presidential candidate John Edwards, will be picketed by the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church. Mrs Edwards, a lawyer and author, died yesterday at the age of 61 after a six-year battle with cancer.
Bikini photo used to derail lesbian student’s lawsuit 13
2:11 PM — A US school district accused of violating a lesbian's rights by making her wear women's clothes is attempting to derail her lawsuit with a photo of her in a bikini. Ceara Sturgis, a student at Wesson Attendance Center, wore a tuxedo in her yearbook photo but was excluded from the book for not wearing female dress.

10:39 AM — A porn actor who contracted HIV while filming has called for condoms to be made compulsory across the adult film industry. Derrick Burts, 24, tested positive for HIV in October after starring in US gay and straight porn films.

GLAAD celebrates 25 years of gay rights campaigning 1
1:10 PM — The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has celebrated 25 years of campaigning. The group was formed in 1987 in New York to protest the New York Post's reporting of HIV and AIDS.
Atlanta pays $1 million to gay bar raided by police 7
11:20 AM — The US city of Atlanta has agreed to pay $1 million to a gay bar raided by police last year. The Atlanta Eagle was raided in September 2009 and patrons said officers subjected them to excessive force and homophobic abuse.

Jamaican gay rights activist found stabbed to death 4
4:35 PM — A member of a gay rights organisation has been found stabbed to death in the Jamaican capital of Kingston. The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) said that the 26-year-old's body was found behind an insurance company building on Friday.
Appeals court hears California gay marriage case 2
3:57 PM — A federal appeals court was due to begin hearing a case on California's gay marriage ban today. The Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco will hear arguments around a federal judge's ruling that the ban on gay marriage in the state is unconstitutional.
Gay and lesbian teens ‘more likely to be expelled or jailed’ 15
1:03 PM — An American study of gay, lesbian and bisexual teenagers finds that they are 40 per cent more likely to be punished at school or by the police and courts than their straight peers. The Yale University study found that lesbian and bisexual girls were particularly at risk.
