North Carolina House approves referendum on gay marriage ban 10
10:33 AM — North Carolina's House of Representatives have approved a measure for a voter referendum on a gay marriage ban. Although the US state does not currently recognise gay marriage, Republicans are seeking a constitutional ban on the practice, which would prevent courts from ruling for marriage equality.

Harvard University hires ‘gay student life’ director 2
5:04 PM — Harvard University has appointed a director of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life. Lisa 'Lee' Forest, who is currently the head of the GLTB and Allies Pride Center at Bridgewater State University in Massechusetts, will take up the post in November.

4:36 PM — Gay news website 365gay.com is to be shut down by Viacom's MTV Networks division. Editor in chief Jennifer Vanasco said MTV Networks “has shifted its online strategy".

5:08 PM — Three gay men have been been attacked in the US state of Utah in the last two weeks. Early on Thursday morning, 32-year-old Cameron Nelson was attacked in American Fork as he took out rubbish at a hair salon.

Poll: North Carolina residents oppose gay marriage ban 8
5:08 PM — A small poll of voters in the US state of North Carolina says that most would vote against a proposed ban on gay marriage. Republican lawmakers announced last week that they will push for a voter referendum on the issue in 2012.

US medical schools ‘don’t provide enough LGBT training’ 5
5:07 PM — A study of American medical schools suggests that they are not giving students enough training on lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender issues. According to the research, most medical schools provide just five hours on LGBT health issues, while one third offer no training on the matter at all.
