    9:39 AM — Prosecutors in California are seeking a new trial for a teenager who shot his gay classmate dead. Last week, a mistrial was declared in the case of 17-year-old Brandon McInernery, who admits killing 15-year-old Larry King in 2008.

    5:33 PM — A school in the US state of Alabama has backed down after telling a student she could not wear a gay rights t-shirt. Sara Couvillon, a student at Hoover High School in Birmingham, threatened school officials with legal action when she was told not to wear the shirt for her own safety.

    10:30 AM — A mistrial was declared yesterday in the case of a US teenager accused of murdering a gay classmate. Jurors deliberating charges against 17-year-old Brandon McInerney could not decide whether he was guilty of first or second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter.

    5:31 PM — A Republican gay rights group is asking a court to declare the ban on openly gay troops unconstitutional. Log Cabin Republicans says it is taking the action because although the ban is due to be repealed this month, it can still be re-enacted in future.

    4:27 PM — Republican lawmakers in North Carolina, US, announced this week that they hope to win a constitutional ban on gay marriage. Speaking at a press conference in Raleigh on Tuesday, they said they will push for a voter referendum on the issue in 2012.

    11:46 AM — Canada's broadcast standards council has amended an earlier ruling which said that radio stations must censor a Dire Straits song which includes the homophobic slur 'faggot'. The body now says the word must be taken in context.

    1:55 PM — The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has condemned MTV for giving a VMA award to a singer it says is "violently anti-gay". Tyler, The Creator, whose real name is Tyler Okonma, won the best new artist award at Monday night's ceremony.

    3:02 PM — Rick Santorum, the anti-gay Republican presidential candidate, claims there is a gay "jihad" against him. The former Pennsylvania senator, who has attacked gay marriage and compared it to incest, was speaking on Friday in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

    2:43 PM — Gay former Army lieutenant Dan Choi has appeared in federal court over a protest he held against the military gay ban. The former soldier, who was dismissed two years ago after coming out on television, chained himself to the fence of the White House last November.

    11:45 AM — A Puerto Rico politician who has voted against gay rights has resigned after reports said explicit photos of him had been found on gay iPhone app Grindr. New Progressive Party Senator Roberto Arango said he had taken some snaps to document his weight loss.

    12:18 AM — Tim Cook, appointed chief executive of Apple today, following the resignation of Steve Jobs, has in the past been described as the “most powerful gay man in Silicon Valley.” Although Mr Cook has never spoken publicly about his sexuality, he has long been described as gay and has never denied the claims.
