Scotland: 89 MSPs support equal marriage

At least 89 Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) support equal marriage, according to latest figures.

Citing the work of Scotland’s Equality Network’s, which is leading the campaign for equal marriage in Scotland, the Herald newspaper says opponents of the measure “face a seemingly impossible task”.

It means the country’s proposed equal marriage bill is likely to pass when it comes to a vote.

The Scottish Government published the Marriage and Civil Partnerships (Scotland) Bill that will enable same-sex couples to marry in Scotland last week.

The process of debating the legislation is now set to begin.

There are currently 89 MSPs who have stated their support for the bill including all cabinet ministers, the leaders of each of the four parties and every Liberal Democrat MSP.

Only 11 MSPs have publicly stated their opposition, so even if all of the 29 MSPs who are so far publicly undeclared voted against it, the bill would still be backed by a majority of more than two to one.
