Nigeria seeks to strengthen anti-gay laws 59
4:06 PM — Lawmakers in Nigeria hope to pass a bill which strengthens laws against homosexuality. The legislation seeks to criminalise same-sex marriage. Its sponsor, Senator Domingo Obende, claimed that gay marriage is "spreading" and must be stopped.

6:08 PM — Ugandan gay rights campaigner David Kato was brave, inspiring and stubborn, his friends and supporters say. The primary school teacher joined the fight for equal rights in Uganda in 1998, when he returned to Africa after the end of apartheid.

10:40 AM — A Ugandan gay rights campaigner who sued a newspaper for publishing the names and photos of gay people has been beaten to death. David Kato's death is being investigated by police and activists say he was attacked in his home near Kampala yesterday afternoon.

5:20 PM — Several gays and lesbians in Uganda say they have been attacked after a newspaper published their names, photographs and addresses. After the Rolling Stone newspaper called for them to be hanged, a gay activist in the country says that one woman was almost killed when her neighbours pelted her house with stones.

5:22 PM — A Ugandan newspaper has published the names, addresses and photographs of the country's "top" gays and lesbians. Rolling Stone, which has no connection to the US magazine of the same name, had a banner across its front page which read "hang them".

6:00 PM — Homophobic Ugandan preacher Martin Ssempa has been accused of being "twisted" for showing his congregation gay porn to persuade them to support an anti-homosexuality bill.
