Russia reacts to overseas “interference” on St Petersburg “gay propaganda” law 29
2:00 PM — A senior official in the Russian government has said he is "perplexed" by the US statement condemning a proposed law which could severely hinder freedom of expression for LGBT people in St Petersburg. Konstantin Dolgov, the Russian Foreign Ministry's Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, said the US State Department's comments were "incorrect".

‘Inspirational’ Ugandan lesbian campaigner wins human rights award 8
1:54 PM — Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera, the Ugandan gay rights campaigner, has been honoured with a prestigious human rights award. The activist, who has risked death to speak up for other LGBT people, received the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in Geneva on Wednesday.

Obama attacks Republican booing of gay soldier 26
10:23 AM — Barack Obama has criticised Republican presidential candidates for staying silent when a gay soldier was booed at an Orlando debate. Stephen Hill, who is stationed in Iraq and spoke via a videolink, was booed for asking whether the candidates would reinstate the ban on openly gay troops.

5:00 PM — US congresswoman Tammy Baldwin has entered the race to win retiring Wisconsin senator Herb Kohl’s seat in 2012. If she is successful, she will become the first openly LGBT senator.
Human rights group claims Iran hanged three men for gay sex 111
2:31 PM — A human rights group has claimed that three Iranian men have been hanged for having gay sex. Iran Human Rights, which says it covers news from the country's official news sources, said state-run Iranian news agency ISNA reported the hangings.

Seven-year-old donates to LA gay centre because he thinks inequality is unfair 40
12:55 AM — A seven-year-old has donated $140 to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) because he doesn't think it's right for gay people not to be treated equally. The child, called Malcolm, was given $140 by his parents to donate to the charity of his choice. He chose to split the money between the gay centre and the HRC.

Six trans women killed in Honduras in two months 7
5:57 PM — LGBT campaigners are calling on Honduran authorities to fully investigate the murders of six transgender women in just 60 days. According to Human Rights Watch, the first death was on November 29th and the latest took place on January 17th.

Turkish LGBT group shut down by court 35
2:36 PM — Another Turkish LGBT organisation has been ordered to close. A criminal court in Bursa, north-west Turkey, ruled that the Rainbow Association must shut down after claims its members had engaged in prostitution. The group denies the allegations.
