Obama praises end of military gay ban 15
5:39 PM — President Obama has hailed the end of the ban on openly gay troops. The 1993 law was repealed today and the president said: "As of today, patriotic Americans in uniform will no longer have to lie about who they are in order to serve the country they love."

2:43 PM — Gay former Army lieutenant Dan Choi has appeared in federal court over a protest he held against the military gay ban. The former soldier, who was dismissed two years ago after coming out on television, chained himself to the fence of the White House last November.

US to announce end of ban on openly gay troops 23
10:12 AM — The Pentagon is set to certify later today that lifting the ban on openly gay troops will not harm the military. This means that gay military personnel will be able to be open about their sexuality at the end of September, as the change does not come into affect until 60 days after certification.

Obama administration asks court to keep military gay ban for now 59
3:30 PM — The Obama administration has asked an appeals court to reconsider a verdict ruling that the ban on openly gay troops should end immediately. Last week, the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Pentagon to cease enforcing the ban.

Military chaplains want reassurances over opposition to homosexuality 57
4:12 PM — Military chaplains are calling for reassurances that troops will not be punished if they speak out about their opposition to homosexuality. According to Associated Press, a joint letter from retired chaplains from 21 religious groups to the lead chaplains of the Army, Navy and Air Force says that troops may be unable to speak openly if they fear punishment.
