The former Lord Chancellor under Margaret Thatcher and John Mayor said insisting that Christians abide by equality laws - such as in the case of hotel owners - was "Orwellian".

5:32 PM — Two high-level female Episcopal priests married in Massachusetts on New Year's Day. The wedding of Rev Mally Lloyd and Rev Katherine Ragsdale is thought to be a first for the US.

Irish civil partnerships come into law 27
11:39 AM — Ireland's civil partnership law came into force at the weekend, although gay couples must wait until early April to hold their ceremonies. The law was welcomed by the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network as a "new dawn" for gay and lesbian couples but other groups said it was not good enough.

2:36 PM — A second gay couple have been barred from applying to marry in Greenwich, south-east London. David Watters and Richard Hull's rejection follows the Rev Sharon Ferguson and her partner Franka Streitzel being denied a marriage at Woolwich registry office last month.
