New South Wales government upholds gay adoption ban 7
4:13 PM — The Australian state of New South Wales has opted to continue a ban on gay couples adopting. Although a parliamentary inquiry had recommended that changing the law would be in the best interests of children, the state government said there was not enough evidence of support for it.

2:27 PM — A poll of 20,000 people has rated Lesbian Vampire Killers the worst movie of 2009. The comedy-horror film by Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Matthew Horne, was almost universally panned for its lads mag humour and "moronic" script.

Katy Perry in trouble over ‘transphobic’ tweet 19
2:48 PM — Katy Perry has been accused of transphobia after using Twitter to mock a photo of trans man. The singer, who found fame with her faux-lesbian hit I Kissed A Girl, posted a photo of a naked man with a beard, hairy chest and breasts.

Happy fourth anniversary for civil partnerships 40
10:35 AM — Today marks the fourth anniversary of civil partnerships in England and Wales. Although Scotland celebrated its first civil partnership on December 20th 2005 due to a misunderstanding over the date, today marks the fourth anniversary for gay couples in England and Wales.

4:28 PM — Figures from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have shown a ten per cent rise in four years in the numbers of people being convicted for homophobic and transphobic hate crimes.

Homophobic singer Buju Banton ‘innocent’ of drug charges 22
11:45 AM — Buju Banton, the homophobic Jamaican reggae star, is innocent of the drug charges against him, his lawyer has said. The Grammy-nominated singer was arrested last Thursday in Miami.

Rwanda to vote on criminalising homosexuality 31
11:11 AM — Rwanda's lower house will reportedly vote today on a revision to the penal code which would criminalise homosexuality. It would impose prison sentences of five to ten years, or fines higher than the average yearly wage.

Lesbian couple win UK appeal over Gibraltar’s housing policy 2
4:11 PM — A lesbian couple who were refused a joint tenancy in government housing in Gibraltar have won their UK appeal. Three years ago, the Housing Allocation Committee refused to grant the unnamed couple a joint tenancy on the basis that they were unmarried.

10:47 AM — An Islington registrar who refused to carry out civil partnerships for gay couples has lost her appeal. The Court of Appeal ruled today that Lillian Ladele had not been discriminated against.

Author Jeanette Winterson attacks ‘anti-gay’ tabloids 12
3:36 PM — Lesbian author Jeanette Winterson has attacked the 'negative' use of the word lesbian in newspapers. Writing on her blog, the Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit author complained that tabloids tended to emphasise the sexual orientation of gay or lesbian criminals.
Anti-gay singer Buju Banton arrested on drug charges 24
2:12 PM — The Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton is in custody pending charges of drug offences. The singer, who has been condemned for lyrics calling for gays to be killed, was arrested in Miami on Thursday.

Annise Parker elected first out gay mayor of Houston 1
11:19 AM — Annise Parker, an out lesbian, has been elected mayor of Houston, Texas. The vote makes the city the largest in the US to elect an openly gay mayor. Parker won against city attorney Gene Locke by 53.6 per cent of the vote.

12:00 AM — The Supereme Court of Pennsylvania has affirmed a lower court ruling awarding custody of twins to Patricia Jones, a lesbian mother, ruling that Jones would provide a better home than her ex-partner, Ellen Boring (the children's biological parent).
