American Psychological Association calls for gay marriage 126
11:07 AM — The world's largest body of psychologists, the American Psychological Association, has called for state and federal officials to lift barriers to marriage equality. Members at the group's annual meeting in Washington voted unanimously on Wednesday to back "full marriage equality for same-sex couples".

12:19 PM — The British government says a consultation on the future of marriage equality and civil partnerships will be held this autumn. Earlier this year, equality minister Lynne Featherstone said the government would begin asking for views on the issue in the summer.

American Indian tribe approves gay marriage 26
1:32 PM — An American Indian tribe in Washington has become the second in the US to approve gay marriage. On Monday, the Suquamish Tribal Council voted to give marriage rights to gay couples on its Seattle reservation.

11:30 AM — A lesbian couple have complained after one of them was ordered to reverse a t-shirt with a gay slogan at country legend Dolly Parton's theme park. Olivier Odom and Jennifer Tipton were told the shirt could offend other visitors.

Anti-gay group files lawsuit against New York gay marriage 28
6:07 PM — An anti-gay group in New York has filed a lawsuit against the city's new marriage laws. The group, called New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, claims the state Senate acted illegally when it voted to approve a gay marriage bill earlier this year.

New York holds lottery for first gay marriages 12
10:34 AM — New York City is to hold a lottery to determine which gay couples can be the first to tie the knot when a gay marriage law comes into power on Sunday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that demand to wed on the first day gay marriage is legal far outstrips supply and 764 couples, including straight couples, will be permitted to wed on the day.

2:40 PM — US gay conservative group GOProud says it wants to meet Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann to discuss her anti-gay views. Mrs Bachmann, has said in the past that homosexuality is "slavery" and that gays are recruiting children. But since she began her presidential campaign, she has refused to talk about homosexuality.

Yesterday, he held a news conference and a reception for gay rights campaigners. At both events, he refused to give his personal view on the issue.

3:20 PM — Gay rights campaigners in Rhode Island are urging the state's governor to veto a civil unions bill because they say it contains “dangerous” and “discriminatory” language. The bill is expected to be passed by the Senate this week but campaigners are deeply concerned about some of the religious provisions within it.
