10:40 PM — Lesbians in China can now legally give blood - although the ban on sexually active gay and bisexual men remains. The Ministry of Health announced last week that the ban on lesbians donating blood would be lifted immediately.

3:21 PM — The Scottish National Party has approved a motion condeming the blood donation ban on gay men. Delegates at the party's conference in Inverness backed a motion which said that new rules allowing gay men to donate blood if celibate for a year are not good enough.

Northern Ireland health minister refuses to lift gay blood ban 70
10:57 AM — Edwin Poots, Northern Ireland's health minister, has refused to lift the lifetime ban on gay men donating blood. He has said that the current policy “should not be altered” because of safety concerns around HIV transmission.

Petition calls for end of gay blood donation ban 40
3:16 PM — A petition has been set up on the government's new e-petitions website to call for the end of the blood donation ban for men who have had gay sex. The petition, created by student Tom King, has more than 900 signatures at the time of writing and asks MPs to look at introducing new evidence-based criteria on which to screen gay and bisexual donors.

US to look again at gay blood donation ban 2
2:00 PM — The US Department of Health and Human Services is to look again at the lifetime blood donation ban for men who have had gay sex. The department said yesterday that the current policy is "sub-optimal" and announced it has instructed advisors to study whether the strict rules can be relaxed.

11:54 AM — A straight Chicago man says he was turned away from a blood donation centre because he "looked gay". Aaron Pace, 22, who says he is effeminate but not gay, went to the Bio-Blood Components donation centre recently.

Nurses back lifting of gay blood donation ban 7
10:39 AM — The Royal College of Nursing says it will lobby for the ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood to be lifted. At the RCN's annual congress in Liverpool yesterday, 87 per cent of delegates voted for an end to the ban.
